Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS)


Our 3 independent RAS can be operated in a wide range of water quality parameters providing a wide scope of controlled conditions, such as water salinity, temperature, and photoperiod. Our tanks are also adapted to conduct trials on different species including fish, shrimps and plants.


Tanks range from 80 to 350 L. The two largest systems can be united into one system for 50 replicate tank trials. Each RAS is installed with mechanical filter model, a biofilter, and a CO2 degasser and skimmer. Oxygen levels can be monitored and controlled by adding aeration at tank level.


Our research facilities are monitored by an automated system (SCADA) that controls our pumps, oxygen, temperature and light, and is connected to a 24hr alarm system. An emergency backup generator is also connected to our facilities.


​Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture System (IMTA)


At our facility the waste effluent of the RAS can be used as input to valuable extractive species providing a demonstration scale of an integrated multitrophic aquaculture system (IMTA). Our system is flexible and allows different types of integration with a range of extractive species, namely Salicornia ramosissima and Hediste diversicolor. It comprises a greenhouse for halophyte growing trials and outdoor facilities with up to 9 culture tanks measuring 500 L for IMTA pilot trials.
